

Brooks grew up in New Albany, IN. He married Mary Janette Clayton in 1954. He graduated from New Albany High School and attended the University of Louisville where he received a Bachelor's degree before moving on to Law School. Having completed three of the four years of the night law school program, he was promoted to Manager of Commerce for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad and had a whole Law Department that worked for him. He served in the United States Army, 3rd Military Railway Transportation Corps, during the Korean Conflict, helping to oversee the use and reconstruction of the Korean National Railroad. Following his transfer to Jacksonville in 1976, Brooks founded the local chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. He was a member of Southside United Methodist Church. In addition to trains, he enjoyed U of L athletics, watching sports, and spending time with his family.
Brooks was preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Ruth Gordon, and his wife, Mary Janette (Clayton) Gordon. He is survived by his daughters Elizabeth (Carr) and Susan, and his sons Walter and Richard, all of Jacksonville; his grandchildren Brooke (Greenville, SC), Stephanie (San Diego), Caitlyn (Guam) and Travis (Jacksonville).
A memorial service will held March 24 at ten-thirty in the morning, at Southside UMC with Pastor Bruce Jones presiding.
