Charlotte Whitter Corey, also known as Binkie to family and friends and Gogi to her grandchildren, passed away December 9th. She was born on August 5th, 1934 in Panama City, Florida. She was the youngest of six children to the late Ernest and Sadie Whitter. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, John Wesley Corey; her siblings, Thomas Whitter, Margaret Kolakowski, Dorothy Corr, and Juanita Hallee. She is survived by her sister, Ernestine Mahan; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Cleveland and Peggy Corey; her daughters, Melodie (Russell) Grice and Camala (Bo) Stringer; her grandchildren, Kristen (John) Waugh, Emory (Skip) Frostenson; and her handsome grandsons, Corey(available) Grice, and Brady (also available) Stringer. Charlotte is also survived by her spunky great -granddaughter, Taylor Elyse Waugh, who we all know was her favorite. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
On December 9th, which was her sweet late husband’s birthday, Charlotte peacefully left this world in red lipstick to make sure they never spent a birthday apart. This is the final chapter of a 65 year love story that now gets to continue in heaven, after only 9 months apart. Even though her family misses her terribly, we are thankful to know they are together again dancing to their favorite song “New York, New York” and eating German chocolate cake. During Charlotte’s life she courageously fought metastasized breast cancer and Dementia. Her spirit was always cheerful and strong and she never complained. Her life, faith and positive attitude serves as a wonderful example of how to live life to the fullest, no matter what obstacles. We now live by her motto of “put on your big girl panties, put a smile on your face with some red lipstick, quit ya bitchin and deal with whatever life throws at ya.”
A special thank you to her Mayo providers: Dr. Alvaro Moreno Aspitia (she secretly called him, “Dr. Cutie Pie”), Shelly Brock and Dr. Kristina DeMatas. We would also like to thank the angels that work at Watercrest Memory care that cared for our Charlotte like she was their own. The staff lovingly kept her Princess routine intact by making sure her hair and lipstick was done perfectly (thank you Jennifer). Lastly we would like to recognize Community Hospice that helped make the transition peaceful for her and the family. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the American Cancer society, Alzheimer’s association, Community Hospice or just go out and have a great glass of wine in honor of our “Gogi”.
The family will receive friends on Sunday December 17th from 3-5pm at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel 4801 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. on Monday December 18th at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel.
