

John was born 9/6/44 in White Plains, NY to Chris and Dorothy Hagenah. He graduated from White Plains High School and attended Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara McAvoy in 1966. He owned Scarsdale Texaco on Weaver Street for many years. John and Barbara lived in White Plains and Armonk, NY until he finally convinced Barbara to move to Jacksonville in 1998.
John was employed by the City of Jacksonville in both the motor pool and at the Montgomery Correctional Facility before retiring at age 70. He was a part-time mediator for the 4th Judicial Court Mediation program in Jacksonville. He served on the Florida New Motor Vehicle Arbitration Board and was a mediator for the Florida Department of Consumer Services. His mediation skills were exceptional and he believed they were honed through the experience of having and raising three daughters.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara. His memory will be cherished by her and their daughters, Laurie Krause and her children, Bennett and Michael of Jacksonville; Bettyann Bucchino her husband, Chris and children, Mark and Ellie of Larchmont, NY and Christen Reynolds and her children, Lauren and Liam of Jacksonville. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Kelly of Brookfield, CT. He was predeceased by his sister, Betty Olsen of New City, NY.
A loyal friend, John is survived by several friends with whom he had maintained life-long relationships, some that began in kindergarten. He most enjoyed spending time with friends and family. From the Long Island Sound to the St. John’s River, he loved being on his boat continuing his eternal quest for the hot spot where the fish were biting.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 1 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm in Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 1 pm in St. Joseph’s Historic Catholic Church, 4214 Loretto Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32223.
