Jacob Dale Schrum (Dale), 62, peacefully went home to his Heavenly Father, August 5th 2023. He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Dr. Stefanie Friedfeld Schrum, his three children and their spouses, Chris and Becca Schrum, Michael and Becca Schrum, Sarah and Tyler Wathen and his four grandchildren, Jacob, Carson, Olivia, and Gloria. He is predeceased by his parents Jacob (Jake) Pinkney Schrum and Gloria Price Schrum and his sister Eva Anna who died at birth.
Dale graduated from North Carolina State University in 1983 and from The Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1987. Dale practiced medicine as a pediatric allergist at Nemours Children’s Clinic for 30 years. As a physician he was respected by patients and colleagues alike. He pursued excellence, not for his own reputation and accolades, but to provide the most compassionate care of the highest standard to countless families throughout the Jacksonville area.
Dale cherished his family. As an only son he faithfully devoted himself to the care of his parents until their final days. He earnestly desired to raise his children to be godly adults and joyfully involved himself in all areas of their lives. He extended this love to his children’s three spouses. He would often say with great fondness “I do not have three children but six, whom I love equally.” As his children married Dale was delighted to see his family grow with the arrival of his four grandchildren. Of all earthly loves, Dale’s affections were greatest for Stefanie. She was his best friend, dearest companion, and treasured wife for every single day they had together. His home was always a welcome place for friends and family. During his illness he acknowledged that faith, family and friends would sustain him.
His love for Stefanie was second only to his love for Jesus Christ his Savior and his God. Dale sought to faithfully walk with the Lord as a worshipful response to the grace he received through the cross. In his final years he lived with ALS. Although his disease brought hard times, Dale committed himself to glorifying God in all things, speaking the beautiful message of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection, giving eternal life to all who believe in Him. Dale looked forward to the day that he would stand before His Heavenly Father, whole and cured of ALS forever.
