

Doris Ellen Goldstein Gross, 88, of Jacksonville passed away Friday, March 6, 2015. Born in New York during the mid-1920’s, she was a daughter of the late Stephen and Marguerite Moses Goldstein. Doris spent time in both New York and New Jersey before moving to Jacksonville in 1979. She was a proud alumnus of The Ohio State University and received her Master’s degree from NYU. Doris served on the board of directors at Congregation Ahavath Chesed, Temple Sinai in Summit, New Jersey as well as with the National Council of Jewish Women. She also served on the review board for foster care and as the president of the board at Brandeis University National Woman’s Committee. For many years, Doris served as a guardian ad litem, a volunteer mediator and as a hearing officer for the State’s Attorney’s office. She recruited and organized the Arts Assembly of Jacksonville’s Arts Mania Events for several years. Doris retired from the River Garden Hebrew Home for the Aged as their Director of Social Services. She had a never ending thirst for knowledge; loved traveling and thus, she acquired many friends around the world. Above all else, she cherished her family and friends. Doris leaves behind a legacy of her intellect, strength, kindness and devotion to those she loved.
Surviving are her children, Richard Gross and his wife Susan, and Barbara Carroll; grandchildren, Jennifer, Amanda, Benjamin, and Joseph. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry A. Gross and a son, Jonathan P. Gross.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at one o’clock in the afternoon at the Congregation Ahavath Chesed with Rabbi Joshua Lief officiating. A graveside service will be held Monday, March 16, 2015 at twelve thirty in the afternoon at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, New Jersey.
