

Dorothy Lorraine Prescott Nettles went home to be with the Lord on September 5, 2017. She was born on January 25, 1926 in Elberton, Georgia. She grew up in Norfolk, Virginia with her loving parents, Wilbur and Clara Bell Prescott. She was one of nine siblings.
In 1941, Dorothy worked at Norfolk Naval Air Station in A&R (Aviation Assembly and Repair). Her favorite quote was “A Slip Of The Lip Can Sink A Ship”.
She married Arthur J.(A.J.) Nettles, who was stationed at Norfolk Naval Air Station on August 21, 1941. Dorothy and A.J. settled in Jacksonville, Florida. They had had three children together, Arthur Donald Nettles Sr., Carleen Nettles and Michael Lee Nettles. After A.J.'s death in 1981, Dorothy married Sam Lewis Nettles of Douglas, Georgia until his death on May 22, 1994.
Dorothy had a business with a friend, Margie Smith, preparing new homes to be sold. They walked to work carrying a ladder and cleaning supplies with child in tow. She retired from Florida State College at Jacksonville in 2000 after 25 years of service. Dorothy was a Sunday School teacher in the 1950's; she taught the GAs and all of them were baptized. She was previously a member of VFW Post in Hilliard, Florida where she served as Chaplain periodically. She volunteered for the VA hospital in Lake City, Florida and made many trips over the years with her VFW post. She volunteered for many jazz festivals over the years. She housed two missionaries that came to start a bible study. Dorothy was raised to help thy neighbor and she did that constantly during her long life. She gave of herself tirelessly to family, friends and strangers alike. She instilled strong values in all of her family. She taught us how to Live, Love and Laugh. She left us a legacy that will be shared for many generations.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur J. Nettles and her son, Arthur Donald Nettles Sr. She is survived by her children, Carleen Nettles Finegan (Bill) and Michael Lee Nettles (Elaine), a sister. Barbara Prescott White (Bobby), nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 1426 Rowe Ave., Jacksonville, Florida 32208. Visitation will be Friday September 15, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. also at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, you may make donations to the American Cancer Society, JDRF or the American Heart Association.
