My husband and I met Ed and Barbara in 2020 when they moved to Del Webb retirement community. We spend most of our time in LI, NY since we are not retired as of yet.  We had the opportunity to see Ed again the week of July 4th as he was recuperating from his broken hip. Regrettably, he was not feeling well enough to enjoy a dinner invitation at our house. Instead, we brought the food to them!  Rest easy my friend Ed, and condolences to Barbara and family

Very sorry to hear of Edward's passing. Warm regards to Barbara and the girls. 

I knew of Edward and the Stricklands over the years through our mutual cousin, Louisa Strickland. But it was when she became ill with cancer that I came to know Edward and Barbara better as they helped us care for her. 

Louisa always loved her Strickland cousins and treasured her time spent with them. I will remember with love and appreciation, all that they did for her.

Praying for comfort for the Strickland family this week and in the days to come.

Ed was a great guy..and we had a lot of good times. I remember he really music as so did I some of his favorites were Patsy Cline, The Statler Brothers and Olivia Newton Jon. I loved seeing him with his dog Mosby as he loved dogs. He will be greatly missed by many.

Sending much love to the Strickland family at this time.  Ed will be in our prayers.   Ed was such a good friend filled with kindness, warmth and honestly.  We spent many fun days in Bermuda in his beautiful home with the best barbecues.  We are so glad that Ed had his loving wife,  daughters,  Mosby  and his entire family to be with him as he passed.

As I think back over the years with Ed, so many memories flood my mind. Being the youngest of the Hodgson grandchildren, my memories with Edward are different from the rest of the group, as I was so much younger. The old adage, “It takes a village to raise a child” is fitting; and Edward was a huge part of my village as I grew up. Edward filled a role for me that was somewhat a cross between a big brother and a father. I spent a lot of time at his house as a child, because I was blessed to have his daughters, Annette and Sheryl, in my life as my best childhood friends. For that blessing, alone, I will forever be grateful to him and Barbara. 

In my memory of Ed as a young man so many things interested him. He is the one who introduced tennis to me. He was always the face behind the camera, not in front. He bought me my first camera.  He was always up to date on movies, making sure to see blockbusters as soon as they hit theaters.  And of course, he always had a sound system and state-of-the art television to play movies with robust sound as soon as they were available to purchase on VHS or DVD.
He was  an amazing cook, and his family was important to him. Many family gatherings were held at his house, and the food was always superb.  I took some of the best vacations to cities like San Francisco and Washington, D.C. to visit him; and he was eternally the ultimate host. He had a wicked sense of humor and an amazing ability to converse with anyone. No one was a stranger to him. He was never bored and never boring. I will remember him lovingly and miss him dearly. 
Until we meet again, dear Edward, rest peacefully.

I was very sorry to learn of Ed's passing. We were great pals at Winter Park HS, where I followed him around as he was so much the better runner than I was.  I am delighted he made the Navy a career, as I know how much he wanted to do that. He was a smart fellow, with an engaging personality and a friend to all. My condolences to Barbara and his family. I will keep him in my prayers.

                          In memoriam: Edward Strickland IV
We commemorate the passage of the eldest of our generation of cousins and siblings, each of us with our own narrative of events that transpired during the times we spent together, whether at the home of our grandparents in Atlanta during summers in the 1950’s, or later at other gatherings, such as a memorable Christmas trip to Islamorada  in the Florida Keys in 1960.  Ed was the de facto leader and instigator of many adventures during our times together and I fondly recall my own version of those events.  We were then nine, and later, ten cousins and siblings.  While we have each gone our own separate ways in the years since, Ed has always been a touchstone for times we serenely recall.  In Naval Aviation parlance as you fly West, Ed: Blue Skies and Tailwinds!

There was hardly ever a dull moment for us growing up with Ed. He was chock full of spunk & had quite the knack for funny jokes & great story telling. I will never forget the special moments I spent with him, "racing" around the circle of Wolsey Dr. (he'd start more than halfway behind & pass me before crossing the "finish" line), keeping me entertained with stories as we drove to Uncle Tom's funeral, making the hours-long drive go by in a flash, numerous visits to his home where he taught me innumerable things about life, filling me with awe showing support for our cousin Louisa by caring for her during a difficult time & walking me down the aisle the day John & I exchanged our vows. Saying goodbye is not easy but I am glad you are now free of pain & I hope you have been greeted by Mom, Dad, Mama & Papa. It brings me great joy imagining you all together again. I will always love you & miss you.  😢💖

To Barbara & the girls I'm sorry for the loss of your loved one.  Back in my younger days running with Cliff (whom I thought to be a little crazy like myself) and being introduced to the Strickland clan, I quickly realized Edward was the Patriarch to come.  His sincerity, honesty, sense of adventure, humor, and willingness to listen before making a judgement was astounding.  Edward was someone who made the world  better place that I wanted to grow old with.

"Bo-WEEEZ!!!"  Your mother, my Aunt Roberta, would call us collectively whenever there were chores to be done, or groceries to bring in from the car or . . . if we were in trouble for something one or all of us had done.   Those were the days--summer days we spent together with MaMa and PaPa in Atlanta, more as siblings than as cousins.   The infamous "iron incident," the billy goat wagon, fishing in the pond, playing baseball, going to church, Sunday dinner. Oh, yes!  And evening prayers with MaMa--you would do your best to make the rest of us start giggling by outrageously intoning the prayer . . . "We THANK thee, OH LORD, for the WORK of THE day . . ."

As long as I had known you, Ed, you were the defacto leader of  us, "da boys" --always quick with a joke or with something up your sleeve for which you enlisted one or all of the rest of us to participate.  Good times we'll never forget.  But you were also a friend indeed, approachable and good-natured, an easy person to get to know and someone who would listen, too.  You will not be forgotten.  And while the earth is a little grayer now, I expect the lights in Heaven above may shine a bit brighter as you regale the host about the rest of us amid the laughter you bring to the telling.  Be at peace now and forever, Ed.  We will surely miss you always.

So many memories from Winter Park High School through FSU and beyond.  A love that has grown and stayed steadfast, has produced children and grandchildren, and has enriched the lives of friends and family. Rest In Peace good buddy, this is such a shock, deepest sympathy for the family.  We were friends from high school days, I miss you and those days.

Edward was the eldest member of our cohort of ten Strickland, Massengale and Johnson cousins. He was very important to me, especially in the past eight years when we talked frequently about family history and shared memories at "Conway," our grandparents' home in Atlanta in the late 1950s. We also discussed everything from his Navy career as a Hurricane Hunter to philosophy, religion and American history. Deepest sympathies to wife Barbara and daughters Annette and Sheryl. Ed was so much like a big brother to me and I will always have fond memories of our family gatherings. There are more memories than can be put on here but I will cherish all of them.  May God grant comfort to Barbara, Annette and Sheryl  during this time. I love you all.
