On November 23, 2025 our family and community lost a beloved legend. A pillar of strength to those he knew and loved, Edward Eugene Witt passed away at his home surrounded by his family at the age of 91. Ed was born April 29,1934 in Alachua, Florida and moved to Jacksonville at a young age with his parents, Alfred and Elzie Witt and his siblings. Ed graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1952 with “the greatest group of classmates anyone could ever hope to have”. Following graduation, Ed elected to serve his country and joined the Air Force. During his four years of service, he was stationed in Texas, Illinois, California, and Hawaii. December,1956, the girl who stole Ed’s heart, Millie Cason, visited him in Hawaii and he proposed. They were married the following July,1957.
Ed and Millie created a beautiful life together. Ed’s work ethic was remarkable and resulted in a long, successful career in the electrical contracting industry. He used his experience and training in the Air Force to successfully complete the IBEW Apprenticeship Program as the Apprentice of the Year. He then began his service to the industry and his career at Miller Electric Company. Ed advanced through the ranks at Miller Electric Company and served as Senior Vice President and General Manager. He retired as Vice Chairman and Associate CEO in 2022 after 65 years with the company. Ed was a leader in the industry and served the N.E.C.A. in every capacity at the local, district and national levels. He was inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Electrical Contracting in 1989.
Ed made generous contributions of time to several organizations including the Gator Bowl Association, Jacksonville Quarterback Club, Vision is Priceless Council and Downtown Jacksonville Rotary. He was initiated as a member of the Beta Zeta Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order, University of Florida. Ed was an avid Florida Gator fan and a proud Bull Gator. He was a long-time member of Timuquana Country Club. His hobbies and interests through the years included golf, hunting, fishing, boating, aviation and travel.
Ed lived a long, accomplished life never forgetting where he came from and crediting all his success to his family and their support. “My wonderful family has made hard work worthwhile.” Ed is predeceased by his loving wife of 49 years, Millie Witt, his parents, Alfred and Elzie, and siblings Mable Redden, Wayne Witt and Freddie Witt. Ed is survived by his two children who will remember him with great respect and admiration, Melody Ann Longstreth (Wes), Edward Eugene Witt, Jr. (Rebecca); six grandchildren who affectionately called him “Papa”, Edward Hunter Longstreth, Elizabeth Witt Jenkins (Will), John William Longstreth II, Lexie Witt Townsend (Alex), Edward Eugene Witt, III, (Grace), Ava Millie Witt; 3 great granddaughters who loved “Big Papa”, Millie Weston Jenkins, Margaret Francis Jenkins, and Ann Remington Jenkins.
Ed is also survived by many loving family members, very dear friends, and loyal caregivers. Your love and support lifted him up in his difficult days.
Thank you, Ed, for setting a great example. Job well done. Rest in peace.
