Elmer (93) died peacefully at home after a brief illness on June 30, 2015.
Elmer was born in Leoti, Kansas on August 17, 1921 to parents, Joseph Laymon and Altha Caldwell.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Gloria Strickland Whitchuch, and his brother, Charles Whitchurch. Elmer is survived by three siblings, Marie Rosebrook, Esther Mae Salzman, and Bernard Whitchurch, four children, Michael Whitchurch (Carol), Steve Hodge, Lori Lynn Whitchurch Hedrick (Merle), and Rod Hodge (Cindy), in addition to many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Elmer served in the Navy as an Aviation Ordainanceman First Class on the USS San Jacinto from 1943-1945. He worked for Montgomery Ward, starting as a manager in training and working his way up to regional district manager when he retired to Florida in 1974.
He and Gloria spent time traveling, invested in real estate, enjoyed time with family and became active in their local church. Though not as out-going as Gloria, he was a vital part to their Ministry as he worked behind the scenes using his servant’s heart to meet the needs of others. Through his illness he was able to draw close to the Lord, and we know that he and Gloria are rejoicing as they are together again, this time in the presence of the God they love.
A funeral service will be held on Monday June 6, 2015 at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church, 124 W Ashley St. Jacksonville, FL 32202 with a visitation from 9:00 AM to service time.
Family requests donations in Mr. Whitchurch’s honor be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hardage-Giddens Greenlawn Cemetery Jacksonville, FL
