

Ernestine Hurlbert Grimm, age 86, passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2012, in Jacksonville. The daughter of William E. and Maggie Lee Hurlbert, she was born in Jacksonville April 6, 1926. She graduated from Stetson University with a B.A. in English in 1949, and began a long career in education in the Duval County public schools, later earning an M.A. in education and eventually retiring after a rewarding assignment teaching English at Stanton College Preparatory School. After retirement, she shared her talents as an uncompensated volunteer assisting the faculty and students at several elementary schools whose principals knew her abilities and sought her assistance in improving their students’ performance in English. In addition to her commitment to education, she enjoyed her interests in local history and architecture, genealogy and the Avondale neighborhood where she lived most of her life, frequently serving as a guide on the RAP Home Tours.
She is survived by her sons Reed W. Grimm (Wendy) and Tracy H. Grimm, her sister Ann Sallette (Robert A., Sr.), brother William E. Hurlbert, Jr., and nephews Robert A. Sallette, Jr. (Linda) and David G. Pearce (Sandee) of Greensboro, N.C.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 24 from 6 – 8 pm at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville, FL. The funeral will be Thursday, October 25 at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bosque Bello Cemetery, Fernandina Beach, FL.
