
After completing high school in Greenville, Ethan served in the Navy as a surgical scrub technician at Norfolk Navy Hospital. After completing his service, he graduated from Furman University and the Medical College of South Carolina. He then completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee, and became a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He began his private practice of medicine in Jacksonville where he remained until his retirement. A personal highlight of his practice was in the children's clinic at Hope Haven Hospital, later Children's Medical Services. After his retirement he volunteered at the Salvation Army and the City Rescue Mission.
Ethan is survived by Carol Cochran Todd; their sons, Ethan O'Brien Todd (Patricia Helwig), Charles Cochran Todd, and Allen Robertson Todd (Perry Johnson); and their grandchildren, Salley Elizabeth, Lila Ferebee, Harriet Mendoza, and Allen Robertson, Jr. He is also survived by his sister, Jeanne Todd Shealey of Greenwood, South Carolina; several nieces and nephews, and his goddaughter, Jane Allison McCutcheon of Greenville, South Carolina.
Ethan was predeceased by his parents; his siblings, John Maxwell Harden, Margaret Evans Harden, and Manley Evans Harden; his cousin, Marguerite Sanders Howard; and his dear friends, John and Joann McCutcheon.
The family would like to thank Sandra Andrews, Zena Williams, and the staff at St. Vincent's Hospital and Community Hospice for their tireless and compassionate care.
A service in his memory will be held at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel, 4801 San Jose Blvd., 32207 on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 11am. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Riverside Presbyterian Church or The Episcopal School.
