Gary James Maxey was born May 14,1956 in San Diego. He spent his first nine years in California before moving to Jacksonville, Florida and residing there for the remainder of his life. He was the third of eight children, and the eldest son. He is survived by his daughter, Ashley (Marcus), stepdaughter, Andrea (Tyler), mother, Helen Hess, and seven siblings: Brenda (Robert), Sandra, Larry (Annette), Wanda (Pete), Buddy (Gena), Barry (Lisa), and Cary (Sandy). He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, close friends, and other loved ones.
Gary worked as a pool-tile-installation contractor in the Jacksonville area for many years, and later, he drove a school bus for Duval County Schools. In October of 2015, he suffered a debilitating stroke, which left him unable to work and unable to speak except with great difficulty. More recently, he fought lung cancer and associated pneumonia, finally leaving his earthly bounds on August 25, 2021 at the age of 65.
Everyone who knew Gary was familiar with his insightful and acerbic wit. Even after his stroke, he was the master of the humorous side glance and loved to crack people up when they least expected it. During his last few years, as he tried to overcome his disability, he expressed his Buddhist philosophy to family members in texted sentiments like “Namaste,” “Serenity now,” or Gary’s favorite, “Embrace the suck.” Gary’s belief in reincarnation brought him comfort, and he’d want us to watch out for him in his next life! In this life, speaking at all became exceedingly difficult for him, yet some few words he spoke often: “I love you.”
The family is hosting a Celebration of Life memorial for Gary on September 11, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Lifespring Church, 1404 Bessent Road, Starke, FL 32091. The memorial will be followed by light refreshments and a social hour (at the same location).
Gary loved flowers, and flowers are welcome at the memorial. However, if you would prefer another way to honor Gary, please consider a donation to Community Hospice and Palliative Care (4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257). The medical professionals and staff there provided compassionate and sensitive end-of-life care for Gary.
