George J. Kunetz of Saint Johns, Florida, journeyed home to the Lord on the morning of Monday, January 18, 2016 with family and his loving wife, Clara Sue of 58 years at his side. George was born on January 31, 1928 in Beaver Brook, PA to the late George P. and Mary (Organus) Kunetz and had 10 brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Clara Sue (McAmis) Kunetz; sons, Mark A. Kunetz and wife, Deborah (Ballard) Kunetz, and James M. Kunetz and wife, Gretchen Greene; daughters, Barbara A. Kunetz, Karen M. (Kunetz) Barnes and husband, Patrick, and Denice I. (Kunetz) Roche and husband, John; grandchildren, Nicole (Kunetz) Bastress and husband, Nickolas, Danielle Kunetz, Kaitlin (Kunetz) Fry and husband, Matthew, James Maxwell Kunetz, Ryan Barnes, Mitchell Barnes, Bradley Roche and Timothy Roche. George is also survived by his sisters, Rita Wright and Dorothy Kunetz and his brother, Robert and wife, Patricia.
George had a great love for his big family and friends; especially his beloved Clara Sue. The couple were longtime members of San Juan Del Rio Catholic Church in Saint Johns, FL where they enjoyed many years attending Mass and enjoying the fellowship of close friends. He could always be found with a huge smile and telling a funny story.
Mr. Kunetz served in Army Communications at the end of WWII, mainly in the Philippines. After his service, he pursued his passion for radio and electronics by attending Capitol Radio & Electronics Institute in Washington, D.C. This led to a 33 year career of service to his country at The National Security Agency. Although George and his colleagues worked in anonymity, he was known for his vast knowledge of foreign signals during the height of the Cold War. His years in silent service to his country were a great source of pride for him. He treasured his opportunity to work for America’s defense and retired in 1983 as a valued member of the Phoenix Society.
George will be remembered as a man who loved God and cherished his wife, family and country.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 6 in San Juan Del Rio Catholic Church.
