George was born on May 12, 1945 in Blount County Alabama. He graduated from Lakeland Senior High School in 1963 and joined the Air Force where he proudly served for six years. After the Air Force, he worked for Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, later CSX Railroad, for 32 years.
He was a constant fixer, tinkerer, and builder of all things. If it was broken, he could fix it. From cars to sinks to tools, George could either build it or he could fix it. He spent his time doing this not only because he enjoyed it, but because it was how he helped others. Helping friends, neighbors and family is what brought him joy.
He was preceded in death by his father, Glen Holmes; his mother, Ruth Holmes; his biological father, R.C. Thompson; his sister, Sharon Mangum and his aunt, Jean Holmes. He is survived by Mary Thompson, his wife of 31 years; his children, Jeremy Thompson (Jill), Amanda Gore (Garrett) and Cassandra Malbasic; his sister, Sallie Whited (Tommy); two nieces, two nephews, and three granddaughters.
A Funeral Service will be held on Monday July 27th, 2020 at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 11801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL at 11:00 a.m. His final resting place will be at Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Jacksonville.
