Georgia Pihos Megas age 94 passed away peacefully on August 8, 2021 after a lengthy illness. Georgia was the youngest of three children born to Greek immigrants, William and Stavroula “Stella” Pihos, in Orlando, Florida. After graduating from Orlando High School, she attended Florida State University and earned a degree in Elementary Education.
While a student in Tallahassee, she traveled with friends to Greek events in Jacksonville hosted by the Church. It was at one of these events that she met Nick Megas, and in him she found a lifelong love of 58 years. As they built their life in Jacksonville, Georgia taught elementary school for 9 years. Then they had two children, Stephanie and Anthony, and Georgia lovingly devoted herself to her family. At home, she and Nick stressed family values, education, and the Orthodox faith. Georgia provided selfless, unconditional love to her children, and the freedom for them to grow into the people they are today. She encouraged them in their endeavors, celebrated milestones and took pride in their accomplishments.
Georgia was a devoted Christian and a member of St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church for almost 70 years. She served the Church in many capacities, always lending a hand as needed. Her love of education and children led her to teach Sunday school and to serve as the Superintendent for almost 20 years. And as an active member of the Philoptochos Society for over 50 years, (the philanthropic arm of the Greek Orthodox Church), she participated in countless projects that made a difference in not only the local community, but throughout the world.
Georgia received the Archangel Michael award for the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Atlanta for her service and dedication to the Church. Working tirelessly at the Greek Festivals, Georgia could often be found in the Kafenio, serving coffee with a quick joke on the side.
The two biggest sources of joy in Georgia’s life were her grandsons, Niko and Michael. She was happiest when she spent time with them, whether it was always having a special sweet treat, to silly conversations, and lots of hugs and kisses.
Georgia is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Nick, brothers Peter W. Pihos and James W. Pihos. She is survived by her children Stephanie (Phil) Petty, Anthony (Michele), and grandsons, Nicholas (Niko) and Michael Megas.
Georgia’s family was always at the center of her life. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, Yiayia, aunt and friend. Our loss runs deep, but when we feel great loss, it is because we also feel great love. Her infectious laugh and kind spirit will remain in our hearts forever.
The family would like to thank the Assisted Living staff at Grand Living at Tamaya and the many caregivers from Granny Nannies and Community Hospice for the care, compassion and love shown to Georgia during her illness. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Georgia’s memory be made to St John the Divine or Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Wisconsin, Inc.
Funeral Services will be held Friday August 13,2021 at St John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church, 12760 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL with Rev. Dr. Nicholas Louh, Rev. Dr. Milton Magos and Father Sebastian Mott officiating.
