

Harriett Shields Smith, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 peacefully in Jacksonville FL. She was born on January 1, 1928 in Knoxville, TN., to the late David Ephram Shields and Gertrude Best Shields. Harriett worked as a teacher and was a caregiver as well as being a loving mother and grandmother. Harriett’s family relocated from Barrington, IL. to Jacksonville’s Riverside area and she attended West Riverside Grammer School. The family then moved to the St. Nicholas area where Harriett graduated from Landon High School with the class of 1947. Harriett was involved in many clubs and beauty contests during her time at Landon. She participated as a contestant in the Miss Jacksonville pageant and served as Queen of Aviation at Southeastern Air Show with the Precision Flying Team of the Navy’s Blue Angels in 1947. She was a lifetime member of Swaim Memorial United Methodist Church in Jacksonville FL.
Harriett was preceded in death by her brother, David E. Shields, Jr. her sister, Erma Shields NeSmith and former husband, Mel Smith Sr.
Survivors include her two sons; Carl Melvin Smith Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, David Robert Smith Sr. (Debbie) of West Palm Beach, FL, her daughter, Karen Smith Dozier (Tom) of Marietta, GA, her brother-in-law, John A. Smith (Frances) of Jacksonville, FL, her two nieces; Judy N. Reid and Lynn S. NeSmith of Jacksonville, FL, her 5 grandchildren; David Robert Smith Jr (Statia) of Jacksonville, FL, James Bryant Smith (Amelia) of Jacksonville, FL, Colby Thomas Dozier of Marietta, GA, Tabor Patricia Dozier of Marietta, GA, Andrew Robert Smith of West Palm Beach, FL, her four great- grandchildren; Austin Thomas Smith, Cale James Smith, Alexander Bryant Smith and Scarlett Amelia Smith, all of Jacksonville, FL.
The family would like to extend their thanks to Haven Hospice and the loving caregivers for their service to our precious mother. The family request memorials be offered to Haven Hospice and Swaim Memorial United Methodist Church and are greatly appreciated.
A family memorial service will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery, 4300 Beach Blvd. Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 11am with Dr. Eddie Lockamy officiating. Serving as Pallbearers will be; David Smith, James Smith, Andy Smith, and Colby Dozier. The family will have a reception to celebrate her life at 12:30pm on Saturday, August 19th at The Peninsula Condominium, 1431 Riverplace Blvd, 38th floor. Valet parking will be available at the main entrance.
