

Henriella Kornegay Key, age 87, passed away on Feb. 3, 2015. Born in Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 29, 1928, to the late Samuel D. and Lelia Mae Champion Kornegay, she graduated from John Herbert Phillips High School in 1946. She received her undergraduate degree from Alabama College (University of Montevallo) in 1949. She then earned a master's in education from the University of Alabama in 1954 and a master's in library science from George Peabody College for Teachers (Vanderbilt University) in 1966.
Mrs. Key enjoyed several years of teaching high school in Alabama counties, including Mobile and Calhoun. In 1967, she moved to Jacksonville from Panama City, where she had been a librarian at Gulf Coast Community College. She was a retired librarian with Duval County Public Schools, having been at several sixth-grade centers and Fletcher High School. She also had been a part-time librarian at the Downtown Campus of Florida State College of Jacksonville. Mrs. Key was a long-time faithful member of Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church.
Preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Dr. Erskine Cleveland Key, and her brother, S.D. (Dan) Kornegay Jr., she is survived by her children, David Erskine Key (Michelle) and Mary Loren Key Brooks (Gary); grandchildren Joshua and Meredith Key, Daniel, Eric and Mary Katherine Brooks, all of Jacksonville; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Ave. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church, 4001 Hendricks Ave., with Dr. Kyle Reese officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church, or the charity of your choice.
