I had the pleasure and honor of knowing Lon Chatfield at one of  the most important times of my life, a time when I decided to go back to school and pursue a  career that I never thought would end up lasting my entire career. 
Lon was my roommate during college and being older than most of us , I looked up to and respected him...if you knew him, you know what I'm talking about. The most professional gentle giant I have ever met. Thank you for choosing Golf as one of your paths because I'm grateful that our paths crossed. 
To Neva, his children and his family and close friends...My heartfelt condolences for your loss.

Lon and I were teammates and friends at UGA.  He was bigger than life and my memories of Lon are like it  was yesterday. My hope is his family will find comfort and peace during this difficult time.

I just heard of Lon's passing and am very sad. Lon and I were real old friends and after many years reunited back in 2023.
Lon was introducted to me by Bruce Strickland, whom passed recently,  back in 1974 while we were both living and working in Fort Lauderdale. This was before Lon went into the golf business. He was selling sporting goods in South Florida.
We had great times down there and he visited me up in Chicago when the National Sporting Goods Show was held there. It was in January and very cold and Lon did not possess any warm clothes- we still had great times.
I am so glad we reconnected.

This past summer we went on a boat ride on the St. Johns river to spend some time with some very close old friends.  We really enjoyed the day, cruising the river and then having lunch together.  For the last 54 years I was given the opportunity to call Lon my friend.  Lon was always in good spirits and was a joy to be around.  I will remember all of the good times that we had and only wish that for one moment we could have gotten into the ring as The American Express.  I will miss you always, my friend.

Lon and I met the 1st day of the 3 year Golf Course Operations program at Lake City Community College 1986. Both of us returning to college, making a career change in our mid 30’s. We became great friends and colleagues from that point on in our careers. Often sharing ideas and maintenance techniques as Golf Course Superintendents. 
Lon provided great entertainment for our class, whether in the classroom or at Ken’s BBQ, where we would consume mass quantities of “All You can eat BBQ Chicken”
Lon’s life was a blessing and his memory is a treasure!

Lon was so much fun to be around. He could tell stories that would bring us all to tears…of laughter. Loved by so many and will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him. Rest in peace big Lon! Your legacy lives on!

My thoughts and prayers for comfort and peace for Lon’s family. I have nothing but good and respectful memories of Lon through the Volunteer Life Saving Corps. To me he was the gentle giant.
