Janice Schleunes, a beloved teacher, parish leader, and friend, passed away peacefully after several years of declining health.
Janice’s father died when she was young, and she was lovingly raised in Daytona Beach by her mother and grandmother. She later attended a boarding school in St. Augustine run by the Sisters of St. Joseph, where her love of faith and learning began to flourish.
A proud graduate of Florida State University, Janice was an avid reader with a lifelong passion for culture, education, and learning. She began her professional career as a teacher at St. Paul’s Catholic School and later worked for Ward Laricy Interiors for several years until her retirement.
In the year 2000, Janice became an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Jacksonville. Her presence and leadership quickly became a cornerstone of parish life. She collaborated in the establishment of the Guild of the Christ Child, which provided shoebox layettes filled with baby supplies for new mothers. She also served as the copy editor of St. Luke’s parish cookbook, Soul Food.
Janice’s leadership was further recognized when Bishop John Howard appointed her as Senior Warden of St. Luke’s, a role she served faithfully for several years. Perhaps her most enduring legacy was her vision and determination in welcoming a Hispanic congregation into St. Luke’s. This effort led to the establishment of San Lucas, the first Latino congregation in the Episcopal Diocese of Florida. For her remarkable contributions, Janice was awarded the Bishop’s Cross of the Diocese of Florida, one of the church’s highest honors.
Even as her health limited her activities in recent years, Janice remained a steadfast supporter of St. Luke’s, staying in close contact with clergy, parishioners, and families. Her faith, dedication, and encouragement touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on her church and community.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 4th at 11:00 AM at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 2961 University Blvd N., Jacksonville, Florida, with The Rev. Miguel Rosada officiating.
