Joel Mitchell Stein died after a lengthy illness on September 11, 2010 and with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Susan Sager Stein; his sister Doris Stein Farber, his children Michelle, Michael, and David (Carolyn) Stein, Michael (Michelle) and Steven (Marsha) Kogan, Debra Stein, and five grandsons; Joshua Stein, Brian Noble, Nicholas, Wyatt, and Emmett Kogan.
Joel was born on December 17, 1931 in Valdosta, GA but lived most of his life in Jacksonville. He graduated from Emory University in 1953 and served in the United States Coast Guard from 1953-1956 where he attained the rank of Lieutenant and was the commanding officer of the CGC Pontchartrain. After his military service and early business experience he felt his true calling was to the medical profession, and attended the University of Florida where he obtained his medical degree in 1965.
As a child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Stein committed his life to helping troubled children and families. For 20 years he was Executive and Medical Director of the Child Guidance Clinic. During this time Dr. Stein also served on many boards and committees throughout Florida. In 1994 he became Medical Director of Daniel Memorial from which he retired in 2004.
Joel was a kind, gentle, and passionate man with an adventurous spirit, who found fulfillment striving for greater self-knowledge and awareness. One of his proudest accomplishments was earning his 3rd degree black belt in Cuong Nu Martial Arts, the oldest person to achieve that level of expertise. The family wishes to extend their sincerest thanks to Joel’s devoted caregivers--Corinne, Latifah, Angela and Glenda.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 14 at Hardage-Giddens (Hendricks Ave) at 10am. Graveside services follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.
