Born in Marianna, FL on August 19, 1928 he was the son of Crawford and Edna (Whiddon) Dickenson. He attended Marianna High School and married Ella-Margaret (Dot) Callin on August 19, 1951.
Prior to his marriage, John joined the United States Army Air Corp in July 1946, which became the newly established United States Air Force in September 1947. He was stationed in Korea during the war there and also had overseas assignments in Iceland and the Philippines. He served several 2 & 3-star Generals, while assigned to the Pentagon. He retired from the US Air Force in 1967, having served 21 years.
After his military service, John managed a motel outside of Andrews Air Force Base, Washington DC, which catered predominately to the military. It was here that he rented a motel room to his future son-in-law. He served in this capacity for over 10 years.
Following this, John began a management career with Coca-Cola in the Capital Heights District of the Washington Metropolitan Area. This brought him in contact with many of the players from his beloved Washington Redskins Football Team. He retired from Coca-Cola in March 1991 and headed home to Florida.
John’s passion after retirement was repairing and restoring bicycles for the neighborhood children, as well as several children’s homes in Jacksonville and St Augustine. He also enjoyed playing Pinochle.
John is survived by his daughter, Margaret Ann (Dickenson) Quintana and her husband, Tony. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ella-Margaret (Dot) Dickenson and his younger brother, Charles Dickenson.
