

He was born on December 13, 1949 in Waycross, GA. He moved to St. Augustine with his family as a child. He graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1967 where he lettered in shot put. John worked hard from a young age and became a mechanic by trade. He always had a natural ability to fix anything. He moved to Jacksonville in 1972 to work for Peter H. Gregg, Inc. and later at Ash Tisdelle, Inc. as Service Manager. In 1995, he opened Herndon's Automotive achieving his long time dream of owning his own business, specializing in Mercedes Benz. He built a loyal following of customers due to his honesty and expertise. John retired in 2017 but still visited the shop daily. He enjoyed gardening, traveling in his RV and spending time with his family and friends.
John is survived by his devoted wife and best friend, Debra, whom he loved deeply. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Cleo Herndon of Waycross. He is survived by his sisters Norma Jean Sikes and Cathy Sweat and brother Jerry Herndon, all of Waycross, John had two loving daughters, Jennifer Herndon White (Dave) and Katherine (Katie) Herndon Eames (Andrew). John had five grandchildren, Mary Page, John David, Frederick, Katherine and Andrew White. He is also survived by Debra's son, Jamie Sanders and granddaughter, Katlyn Griffin (Jamar) and their children, Aaliya, Mekhi and Maia. He was loved and will be greatly missed by all, including many other family and friends he made throughout his very full life.
There will be a memorial service followed by a small reception in his honor on Thursday July 27, 2023 at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, in John’s honor, please donate to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. www.stjude.org
