

John Lucius “Jack” Kirby, 84, of Jacksonville passed away on December 23, 2014. A lifetime resident of Jacksonville, he was a son of the late Claude C. and Lucy Greenwood Kirby, the youngest of their six children. Mr. Kirby graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and the University of Florida, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After graduation, he entered the United States Marine Corps. during the Korean War. After two years of active duty and one year in a reserve unit, Jack had attained the rank of Captain and was honorably discharged. Upon completion of his military service, he entered the general insurance business where he remained his entire career, owning Jack L. Kirby Insurance which is now owned by his son. During his insurance career he represented many different insurance companies, serving on the advisory board of many. Jack was active in several community organizations and was a member of the Timuquana Country Club, a past member of The River Club, The Seminole Club and the University Club. He loved the game of golf almost as much as he loved the Florida Gators. He is survived by his wife Virginia, son John L. Kirby, Jr. (Suzanne), daughter Kevyn Kello (Frank), grandsons John L. Kirby III and Nicholas C. Kirby. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Claire Alexander; brothers, Claude C. Kirby, Jr., Frank Kirby, Malcolm Kirby and Capt. Gerald Kirby who was killed while serving in the USMC on Iwo Jima in 1942. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at two o’clock in the afternoon at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Gerald Alexander, nephew of Mr. Kirby, officiating. A private graveside service will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery with the Reverend David Austell of Holy Trinity Anglican Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida or to Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 3889 Eloise Street, Jacksonville, FL 32205.
