

Dr. John Catlett Rumble, 87, died in Christ on February 14, 2018. He was born July 7, 1930 in Davenport, Iowa to Dr. Heber and Kathleen Rumble and was a resident of Jacksonville, Florida for 54 years. He graduated from Memphis State (University of Memphis) in 1952 with a degree in chemical engineering and the highest grade point average of any male graduate to that date. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Tennessee (UT) in June 1955, tied for 1st in his class. He joined the Navy and was sent to NAS Jacksonville for his first commission. He retired from the Navy in June 1958 and went back to Memphis to attend orthodontic school at UT in Memphis where he graduated with his Master of Science in Orthodontics in December 1959, 1st in his class. In February 1964 John moved his family to Jacksonville and opened his orthodontic practice, which he maintained until his illness in December 2016. John began teaching at Jacksonville University in 2005. In 2006 he was awarded part-time teacher of the year and in 2008 he was awarded Clinician of the year. He found his “true calling” in teaching and mentoring his students. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church. He was a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontics and the Southern Society of Orthodontics for over 50 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 49 years, Janet S. Rumble; children, Jonni Wilkinson (Mark), Perry Rumble (Patience), Susan Pair, Susan Spalding (Don), Kathy Earick (Wayne), and Pam Sorensen (Rob); a sister, Nancy Jo Deaton (Dr. Jerry); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son, Mark Rumble, his granddaughter, Angie Cason and his son-in-law, Chris Pair.
Visitation will be held Sunday, February 18, 2018 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel. The interment will immediately follow the service in Oaklawn Cemetery with a reception following the internment. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a scholarship in his name at The College of Orthodontics at Jacksonville University.
