

Joseph was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts on September 22, 1930 to Joseph and Gladys (Brissette) O’Meara.
Joseph graduated from Dorchester High School and attended Boston University. He served honorably in the US Army with the occupation forces in Europe from 1952 to 1954.
He and his wife of 67 years, Dorothy (Liberatore) O’Meara were married on September 3, 1956.
He built an extremely successful career in the financial industry, first as a bank examiner, serving as Training and Development Officer for the New England District, Examining Division, Federal Home Loan Bank Board 1954 - 1965, and subsequently as Treasurer, Vice President and eventually President and Chief Executive Officer of Middlesex Federal Savings in Somerville, Massachusetts, from which he retired in 1989. He continued to serve as Chairman, Executive Committee of the Board of Directors until 1995.
He served actively in leadership roles of many civic, professional, and philanthropic organizations. Joseph was most proud of his work as a Corporator and Trustee of the Somerville Hospital, Somerville, Massachusetts. Additionally, he was a past president of the Boston Chapter, Controllers and Financial Managers Society, past president of the Somerville, Massachusetts Kiwanis Club, past vice president and director of the Massachusetts Savings League, past treasurer and director of the Somerville Chamber of Commerce and past director of the Bankers Data Processing Corporation.
Joseph and Dorothy retired to Fort Myers, Florida in 1995 and remained there until moving to Jacksonville, Florida in 2018.
Joseph was predeceased by his sister, Geraldine (O’Meara) Hayden and is survived by his wife, Dorothy, brother James O’Meara (Diane), two sons, Dennis (Donna) O’Meara and Kevin (Barbara) O’Meara, two grandchildren, Caitlin (Grant) Greenwell, and Kyle (Brooke) O’Meara, and two great grandchildren, Madison and Charlotte Greenwell.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 1950 Bartram Rd, Jacksonville. Fr. David Thomas will be the celebrant. The Mass will be followed by committal services with military honors at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.
The family requests prayers and Holy Masses be offered for the repose of Joseph’s soul.
