Katherine Harkin Healey (“Kay”), a long-time resident of Jacksonville, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. She was one of five children born to the late Genevieve and Patrick Harkin on September 16, 1917, in New Haven, Connecticut. Kay graduated from New Haven High School in 1934 before attending and graduating from Albertus Magnus College in 1938.
Kay married her late husband, Dennis Joseph Healey (“Doc”), in 1947, upon his return from serving abroad during World War II. Doc’s job with Seagram & Sons brought the couple from Hartford, Connecticut, to Jacksonville in 1955. Another transfer with the company in 1965 landed the Healeys in the Tampa/Clearwater area. Kay and Doc eventually moved back to Jacksonville in 1989 to be closer to family. Kay and Doc were married for 54 years before his passing in July of 2001.
Kay was a long-time resident at Solano Grove Condominiums on San Jose Boulevard. She and Doc were past members of Assumption Catholic Church, San Jose Catholic Church and San Jose Country Club. Kay was a current member of Holy Family Catholic Church. In her younger years, Kay was active in her church circle, was an avid bridge player, and golf enthusiast. Most recently she enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, staying up on current events, and spending time with her family. Her sense of humor kept us all smiling.
Kay is predeceased by her doting husband, Dennis; her brother, Edward Harkin; and sisters Genevieve Lewis and Virginia Clifford. Kay is lovingly remembered by her sister Elizabeth Harkin of Wallingford, CT; sister-in-law, Re Harkin of Ponte Vedra; daughter, Betsy (Robert) Woods of Vienna, VA; son, Honorable Russell (Katharine) Healey of Jacksonville; grandchildren Mary Beth (Mitchell) Jones of The Plains, VA; Dennis (Colleen) Woods of Reston, Virginia; Kevin (Erica) Healey of Tampa; and Allison Henderson of Jacksonville. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Dylan and Russell Jones; Fiona and Greta Woods; and Kevin Healey, II.
The family wishes to thank Kay’s loving caregiver, Karen Della Porta, for her years of dedicated service to our beloved Mom and Grandma. Additionally, we offer our heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Community Hospice. To Celeste, Robin, Tatisha, Samantha, Doloris, Anna, Dr. Vildor and Dr. B, you are truly angels on earth. Thank you.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 15, at 12 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 9800 Baymeadows Road, Jacksonville, Florida, 32256. Private interment will take place at a later date.
