

Gene Tompkins was born May 23, 1936 at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, FL. When he was three his family moved to Jacksonville, FL where he spent the remainder of his life. Gene graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1954 and earned his AA degree from Jacksonville Junior College in 1956. He then served four years in the United States Air Force; his specialty was Ground Radio Maintenance. During this time Gene was stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX, Scott AFB in Bellville, IL, Tyndall AFB in Panama City, FL, Kadena AFB in Okinawa, and Dobbins AFB in Marietta, GA. Gene was honorably discharged in September of 1960 and was very much a homebody from then on. After returning home Gene worked as an Avionics Technician for Naval Aviation Depot at NAS Jacksonville until he retired in 1995. He spent the years following his retirement spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren. Gene married the love of his life, Nancy Bartley Tompkins on November 20, 1965; they were married 49 years. In July 1967 Gene and Nancy had their first child, a son they named Tim. In November 1968 their daughter Cathy completed the family. Cathy married Marshall Floyd in 1993 and a few years later in 1995 Tim married Audrey Barnes. Gene and Nancy have four grandchildren, Caitlyn and Wade Floyd, Codie and Cassadie Tompkins, who were the apples of his eye. He enjoyed spending time with immediate and extended family members at their lake property on Twin Lakes in Interlachen, FL. Many weekends were spent driving the boat while his children, nephews, and their friends enjoyed water sports such as skiing and hydro-sliding. Gene enjoyed maintaining his yard and viewing the beauty he saw as he sat on the front porch and the wildlife that would come visit the back yard. His sweet, generous nature was obvious to everyone he came in contact with; Gene always put others before himself, especially his family. Gene is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.He is also survived by his sister Betty McMenemy (Terry), sister-in-law, Marjorie Tompkins, and four nephews. Committal Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
