Dr. Leonard Jay Lipkin, PhD, of Peoria, Illinois, passed away on September 9, 2025. He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Lipkin-Balser; his son, David Lipkin; daughter-in-law Josie Jordan; his grandchildren, Dori Balser, Ellis Balser, Ari Lipkin, Ray Lipkin, and Elle Lipkin; his life partner, Eve Aptheker; extended family; and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helene Korach Lipkin and Max Lipkin, and his sisters, Lenore Lipkin Liu and Lois Wright.
Born March 22, 1938, in Peoria, Leonard graduated from Oberlin College and earned his PhD in mathematics and statistics from the University of Michigan. He was a professor of mathematics and statistics at the University of North Florida for over 50 years and served as department chair for several years.
Leonard’s love of learning was matched by a lifelong love of music. A gifted clarinetist and classical guitarist, he was equally at home performing Bach and playing and singing songs by John Denver, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, and Simon & Garfunkel. Favorites in his repertoire included Take Me Home, Country Roads, You Are My Sunshine, and Me and Bobby McGee. His powerful voice could be heard in The Coves Singing Circle. He was known for spontaneous breakouts of Oklahoma!, the University of Michigan fight song, and the Peoria High fight song.
He was deeply active in his synagogues throughout his life. His wonderful voice was a regular presence in services, especially in the chanting of haftorah. He taught Bar and Bat Mitzvah students and gave generously of his time, treasure, and talents to his community.
Known for a wonderfully silly sense of humor and an extremely positive attitude, even when life threw curveballs, Leonard delighted in symphony concerts, musicals, college basketball, golfing, and Pink Panther movies.
He adored his grandchildren, who adored him in return. He often laughed so hard that tears came to his eyes, and it was impossible not to laugh along with him. He will be remembered by all who knew him for the joy, humor, and love he shared so freely.
A service will be held at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria, IL for close family. A memorial service in Jacksonville, FL will be planned for after the High Holy Days.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the River Garden Hebrew Home or the Jacksonville Jewish Center.
