Lew was born July 2, 1961, in Mansfield Ohio to Lewis and Marilyn Duffey. At age 9, he moved to Dunedin, Florida. There, he and his family lived for seven years. In 1977, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he would graduate from Sandalwood High School two years later. In 1981, Lew enlisted in the United States Armed Forces. He served in the Air Force as a radiology specialist for a total of five years. Lew welcomed his first-born child, Aubrey J. Duffey, into the world on February 11, 1995. His son, Preston L. Duffey, followed on January 21, 1997. In Preston’s first grade class at Mandarin Oaks Elementary School, Lew met his second wife, Laura G. Duffey. Lew and Laura married in February of 2003. This gave Lew two additional daughters, who he adopted, Madison J. Gilmore-Duffey, and Sydney E. Gilmore-Duffey. The family lived together for fourteen years in St. Johns, Florida. Lew witnessed all four of his children graduate from high school, as well as his eldest daughter become engaged.
Lew had a long-time passion and deep respect for the game of golf. He began playing as an adolescent, and continued into adulthood, where he taught his son to play. Together, they bonded over their shared affection for the game. Lew was also an avid drummer, and spent most of his free time making music. During the last four years of his life, he worked at MarineMax in Jacksonville, Florida. There, he developed a love for being on the water. He enjoyed many summer days boating with his family and friends.
Lew is survived by: his wife, Laura; children, Aubrey, Preston, Madison, and Sydney; parents, Lewis and Marilyn Duffey; sisters, Debbie Jones (Willis Jones), Diane Paruolo (Vincent Paruolo), and Danette Higgins (Marty Higgins); as well as four nieces, three nephews, four great nieces, and two great nephews.
