

December 20, 2025. She grew up in Durham, NC, but had lived in Jacksonville, FL since 1965.
The summer before entering Duke University Margaret was the teletype operator at a stock brokerage firm. What she learned there led to a subsequent lifelong hobby of researching and investing in stocks, bonds, and real estate. Foremost in her life were her family, her Christian faith and her friendships. Her current church home is Calvin Presbyterian in Jacksonville, FL.
Margaret graduated from Duke University with double major in English and Psychology and also earned a Master’s Degree from the University of North Florida.
For a number of years she was the school psychologist for St. Johns County (St.
Augustine, FL), administering psychological tests to determine eligibility of students for exceptional education classes.
While her husband was a student at Union Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA, Margaret edited books for John Knox Press (now Westminster Publishers), Presbyterian book publishers. She felt that her most significant work was as copy editor for one of the books in the Laymen’s Bible Commentary Series.
While her husband served Arlington Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, Margaret collected recipes from members, compiling and editing them into a 242-page cookbook, Wonders of Cooking.
Margaret was the only child of Viola Carroll McCauley and Paul Crawford McCauley. A cousin’s recent ancestry research revealed that two McCauley brothers, William and Matthew, immigrated from Ireland to Orange County North Carolina where they bought 750 acres of land and in 1760 donated 350 acres for the construction of the University of North Carolina. It documented that William fought with Washington at Valley Forge and later became a NC State Senator.

Margaret was predeceased by James in 2018, after 61 years of marriage. Their son, Eric, in 2014 at age 53. Margaret is survived by her daughter, Melanie Carroll Lloyd Thompson (John) and granddaughters Stephanie Elizabeth Thompson and Heather Ellen Thompson Milstead (Brice), all of Columbia, SC.
She is also survived by her brother Ray Vance Hopper, son of Margaret’s biological mother Jeanie Gray Williams Hopper. Ray is a resident of Morehead City, NC and Eleuthera, The Bahamas.
Margaret’s funeral will be at Clements Funeral Home, 1105 Broad St, Durham, NC on January 24, 2026, with Visitation 10:30-11:30AM, and Funeral 11:30 AM.
Burial to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Those attending are invited to lunch at Clements reception building located next door. Bullocks BBQ will be served.
