Marilyn Fleet Sandler, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 10, 2021 in Atlanta, Georgia, surrounded by her family. Marilyn was born October 26, 1930, in Live Oak, Florida, and moved to Jacksonville in 1948 after graduating from Suwanee High School. Marilyn’s husband of 64 years, Nathan “Sonny”, preceded her in death in 2016.
Marilyn attended Florida State University when it was Florida State College for Women, and later transferred to the University of Florida and graduated as a Gator with a degree in Education. After marrying in 1952, Marilyn and Sonny raised four daughters in Jacksonville. Marilyn began her career as a first grade teacher and taught at the Jewish Day School, later becoming the the first principal of the Solomon Schechter Day School and Pre-School at the Jacksonville Jewish Center, and she served in that role for over 35 years. Marilyn was beloved, respected, and appreciated by hundreds of students and parents over the years. After retiring, Marilyn volunteered for many years at Baptist Hospital, spent time with friends, and most of all, enjoyed being “Mama” to her 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Marilyn is survived by her daughters, Renee (Rick) Janovitz, Arlene Gibbs, Suzy (Ricky) Goldman, and Holly (Mark) Emas; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-children. The family is especially grateful for the love and devotion of Marilyn’s caregiver, Annette Easley.
A graveside funeral service will take place at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, December 14th, at the New Center Cemetery (43rd & Liberty Streets), in Jacksonville, Florida with Rabbi Jonathan Lubliner officiating.
Contributions in Marilyn’s memory may be directed to the DuBow Preschool and the Martin J. Gottlieb Day School and Weinstein Hospice and Palliative Care in Atlanta.
