She was born in Frankfurt, Germany on March 15, 1926 to Toni and Paul Hoensch.
Her father played the oboe in the opera house in Frankfurt. Her mother died when she was 9 years old.
She was then raised by her father and housekeepers with help from her older sister Helga who came to America in the 30’s.
Marion went to school to learn basic home-making skills and also studied to be a kindergarten teacher. During World War II
Marion was the only survivor when the kindergarten where she worked was bombed. Her boss had sent her on an errand to
pick up his briefcase. Later she met an American soldier, Bill Montgomery, who would later become her husband. He was in
the Normandy invasion where he was wounded, put on a hospital ship and the ship survived hitting a mine. Marion would
later bring their daughter Sylvia by ship to America to reunite with Bill. After the couple settled in Columbia, SC, William Claude Jr.
was born and later Paul Douglas in Jacksonville, FL. Because Doug was born deaf, a family friend, Leo, encouraged them to visit
Trinity Baptist Church where there was a deaf ministry. This exposure to the gospel resulted in the family getting saved over a
period of time. To the glory of God, many other lives were touched through the faithful service of this couple. Marion worked very
hard in helping her husband in various businesses and equally hard in serving the Lord. She was a Sunday school teacher,
helped on a church bus route, fed servicemen and ladies on Sunday’s and visited nursing homes. She was a wonderful example
to her family and friends and is greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, sister and son-in-law.
Survivors include her daughter Sylvia Gray, 2 sons Claude Montgomery Jr., Paul Douglas Montgomery, 2 grandsons David Scott, Tyler, 1 granddaughter Kelsey and 6 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements under the care of Hardage-Giddens Edgewood Chapel, (904) 388-2711.
