

It is with profound sadness that we share the news that our mother, Mary Katherine Howe (née Smith) 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on February 14th, 2026.Mary was known for her fierce love of family and warm, giving heart. She was the anchor of our lives. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, William T. Howe. Mary was an avid sports fan and remained a steadfast supporter of her beloved Kansas City Chiefs. She is survived by her children, son Michael Howe of Jacksonville, FL, her son David Howe of Saint John’s, FL, and her daughter Patricia Howe of Charlotte, NC. Mary dearly loved her husband, children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mary is also survived by her siblings: Eleanor, Sheila, Steve, and Regina and was preceded in death by her siblings Dennis, Judy, Donna and Pat.
Mary was born September 20th, 1937, in Kansas City, MO, to Dennis and Juliette Smith, the third oldest of 9 children. It was there she met and married Bill and eventually they moved to Jacksonville, FL in 1971. In 1978 Mary joined the Mandarin Garden Club. In 1985, Mary became a certified Master Gardener through the University of Florida and spent decades volunteering for the Duval County Extension Office sharing her knowledge. She started their first demonstration and butterfly gardens and remained a member until her death. Her family is grateful for the wonderful friends she has made through these organizations who have showered her with kindness and love.
A Catholic mass in her honor will be held at 10:30, Saturday April 18th, 2026, at San Juan Del Rio Catholic Church. At 1718 State Road 13, Fruit Cove, FL 32259. The mass will be followed by a reception in the church auditorium.
En lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and the Mandarin Garden Club.
