

Mary attended Stephens College in Columbia, MO and graduated from the University of Iowa, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.. In 1941 she married the late Robert M. Sanford and moved to Jacksonville. Throughout her lifetime she was active in the Episcopal Church, PTA, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, the Kappa Alumnae Association, and did volunteer work for various organizations. During WWII she was a loyal plane spotter for the government at the old George Washington Hotel.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the entire staff of Taylor Care Center for their loving and compassionate care over the past two years.
Mary is survived by her children, Sharon Johnson, Patricia Sanford, Robert Sanford (Carol) of Jacksonville, grandson, Michael Johnson (Rebecca) of Orlando, great grandchildren, Gavin and Kyra Johnson, brother Patton Apgar (Dorothy), and nephew, Tom Apgar of Marshalltown, Iowa.
A visitation for Mary will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at The Oaklawn Chapel. Funeral services on Friday will be private. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Samuel C. Taylor Foundation, 6601 Chester Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32217. HARDAGE-GIDDENS, THE OAKLAWN CHAPEL, 4801 San Jose Boulevard is serving the family.
