Melvyn Herschel Fruit, a pillar of his community and a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was 86 years old.
Born on June 17, 1937, in Buffalo, New York, Mel was the son of Morris and Ella Fruit. He grew up in Buffalo alongside his sister Phyllis, surrounded by a close-knit extended family. Mel's early years were marked by a curious mind and a strong sense of determination, traits that would define his life and career.
After graduating from Cornell University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree, Mel pursued his passion for law, earning his degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1962. His career began in Washington, D.C., where he joined the Federal Trade Commission. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Beverly, whom he married in 1967. Their enduring union spanned 57 years, a testament to their deep love and mutual respect.
Relocating to Bellevue, Washington, Mel continued his distinguished career by joining Paccar, a railway, logging, and heavy-duty truck manufacturing company. Yet, the call to be closer to Beverly's roots led them to Jacksonville, Florida, where they settled with their newborn daughter, Lori. Just a few short years later, son, Andrew was born in Jacksonville. Mel’s career continued to flourish as he rose to the position of General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Sav-A-Stop. In 1982, he took a bold step and ventured into entrepreneurship, founding his own management consulting business, which he skillfully operated for over four decades, building enduring personal and business relationships with clients along the way.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mel was deeply committed to serving his community. He dedicated his time and expertise to numerous boards and committees of business groups and Jewish organizations. His leadership roles included serving as President of Congregation Ahavath Chesed, Regional President of the American Society Corporation Secretaries, and Director of the Florida Retail Federation. Mel’s contributions left an indelible mark on those he served and inspired countless others to follow his example of selfless service. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the communities he enriched.
Mel will be remembered fondly for his ebullient personality and positive spirit. He loved the Jazz festival, volunteering at the Amelia Island Concours d’ Elegance, playing tennis and numerous other cultural pursuits.
Mel is survived by his devoted wife, Beverly, his children Lori Fruit and Andrew (Julie) Fruit, grandchildren Michael, Sam and Everett, sister, Phyllis (Joel) Polster, brother-in-law Honorable James L. Nelligan, niece Ellen Polster, nephew James (Joanne) Nelligan, grand-niece Rachel, grand-nephew Ryan, and a host of relatives, friends, and colleagues who will deeply miss him.
