

The son of Abraham and Nabeeha Akel. He was raised in Bennettsville, SC. He graduated from the University of South Carolina and received his Master’s degree from MIT. He retired as a Captain in the US Navy, Reserves and served in the Civil Engineering Corps. He was a founding partner of Akel, Logan and Shafer, a local architectural and engineering firm. And was a co-founder of the First National Bank in Georgia and Florida, now Ameris Bank Corps. His service to his country and love of travel took him to every state and over 64 countries.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Akel; daughters, Nancy Akel Draughon of Russellville, AR, Carolyn Lemia Akel of St. Augustine, FL and Sharon Akel Muse; son-in-law, Fred Mount Muse of Atlanta, GA. And his beloved grandchildren, Riley Muse, Sydney Muse, Olivia Draughon and Michael Draughon. He is also survived by his sister, Anne Bajalia; and brother, Fred Akel. His brothers, Shibley Akel and Joe Akel; and his sister, Nada Akel preceded him in death.
His life will be celebrated at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 7500 Southside Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32256 on Friday January 19th, at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers you are asked to send donations to Episcopal Church of the Redeemer/Akel Memorial http://www.redeemerjax.org
