

Commander Michael Joseph “Mike” Gardella, USN (Ret.), passed away on January 25, 2026, in Jacksonville, Florida, at the age of 63. A proud veteran, devoted family member, and steadfast friend, Mike’s life was marked by service, loyalty, and a deep love for his country.
Born on April 24, 1962, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Mike was the son of William E. Gardella and the late Joan Dugan-Gardella. He graduated with a B.S. in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a Master's in Petroleum Management from the University of Kansas, laying the foundation for a distinguished career in the United States Navy.
Mike served his country with honor and distinction for 25 years as an active-duty officer in the U.S. Navy. Rising to the rank of Commander (CDR), he held assignments aboard several notable vessels, including the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk, U.S.S. Thach, and U.S.S. Hué City. Throughout his military career, he received numerous awards in recognition of his leadership and dedication to duty, most notably two Meritorious Service medals and five Navy Commendation medals.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mike was known for his unwavering friendship and meticulous nature. He was a loving son, husband, brother, and caregiver who brought strength and compassion to those around him. His patriotism ran deep—he lived with integrity and pride in all that he did.
Mike shared his life with his beloved wife, Caren J. Gardella. Through their union, he became a cherished part of a blended family that included stepchildren, Tyson Dolan, BJ DeJong, and Tresa Singleton; son-in-law, Ryan Singleton; and step-grandchildren Rainie Singleton, Rinsley Singleton, and Ryan Singleton.
He is also survived by his father, William E. Gardella; sister, Kathleen A. Gardella-Lovett; brother-in-law, Brendan J. Lovett; nephews, Andrew M. Lovett and Colm J. Lovett; and niece, Roisin L. Lovett.
Mike was predeceased by his mother, Joan Dugan-Gardella; and his uncle, James J. Dugan.
In addition to his military service and devotion to family, Mike found joy in NASCAR racing and riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles—pursuits that reflected both his adventurous spirit and appreciation for American tradition.
A memorial service honoring Mike’s life will be held in Riverton, New Jersey, date to be determined.
Mike was a true American patriot. He will be forever missed.
