Nina Olive Johnson, 108, was born in Sharon, OH and passed away on the 13th day of March 2013. She was the only daughter of George Washington Franklin and Susan Ann McGuire. She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Remus Carr Johnson Sr., by her brothers Edward and George and by her son Remus Carr Johnson, Jr. Nina is survived by her daughter Shirley “Jonnie” Long, 6 grandchildren, Nina Brown, Cass Hoag, Larry Johnson, Jeffery Johnson, Brian Johnson, Richard Johnson, 7 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren.
Nina was a premature infant and was not expected to live, but she thrived. She learned to read at home and entered school in the third grade. She completed her formal education by graduating from the Martin School of Business. In 1920 her family moved to Wilmington, NC to find work. She married Remus Johnson there, and in 1922 they returned to Ohio.
Nina was a truly outstanding woman who had many occupations and careers. She helped her husband in his business while caring for her children. When his business failed, she took in a boarder to help the family. During this period in her life she started a Girl Scout troop and made a uniform for each of the 31 members. She later became a Reginald Director for the Girl Scouts of America.
Her next career was in retailing and lasted long enough to help pay the college tuition for her children. While working full time, she became President of the Federated Women’s Club of her community in southwestern Pennsylvania. At age 54 Nina studied and became a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Pennsylvania. She spent 12 years working in a state mental hospital.
After several happy years of retirement in Delaware and Maryland, her husband became disabled and she was his care taker until his death.
Free of that responsibility she garnered 900 hours of volunteer work in the emergency room of the local hospital. She was a faithful member in the Community Church where she played the bells. She continued to write poetry, paint, produce hand-painted greeting cards and assist in community events.
She moved to Westminster Woods on Julington Creek in 1996. She lived in an independent apartment and volunteered whenever she was able to help. She traveled the campus on her bright red tricycle greeting friends and attending activities. Her longevity, friendly nature, and delightful sense of humor made her an inspiration to all of the residents.
A Memorial of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, April 6 at 1:30 PM in the Auditorium at Westminster Woods on Julington Creek.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that donations be made to the Foundation of Westminster Woods, 25 State Road 13, St. Johns, FL 32259.
