Pauline Joyce (Nievera) Laliberte took her last breath on August 12, 2022 after a valiant battle against ovarian cancer. Never one to back down from a challenge, she looked her diagnosis right in the eye and said, “Give it your best shot.” She fought the good fight for more than two years, beating the odds and spending time with cherished family and friends, time that had taken on precious new meaning given the reality and severity of her diagnosis. There are a number of words that could, and have, been used to describe our mother, but none are more fitting than strong, spirited, stubborn, generous, compassionate and a fighter. She lived each day with dignity, grace, courage and a vibrant sense of humor.
Pauline was born and raised in Cumberland, RI, and as an only child often remarked that she grew up lonely. She spent her entire life cultivating close relationships with extended family and a large circle of friends, all of whom she considered her “family.” Pauline was steadfast in her faith, a loyal friend, and actively engaged in her church community.
Pauline was a patient, devoted, and firm wife to an occasionally temperamental “Command Sergeant Major,” the late Roland Douglas Laliberte to whom she was married for 50 years. She was the fiercely protective and loving matriarch of our close knit family. Her strength of character, moral compass and ability to remain calm and focused in the midst of any storm serves as the example by which we model our lives. Our mother was the living embodiment of the statement, “It takes a strong woman to raise strong women.”
In addition to her late husband, Pauline was predeceased by her beloved parents, Joseph and Nellie (Baranski) Nievera. She is survived by her daughters Kristen Laura Laliberte of Warwick, RI, and Robin Michelle Zuckerman (Joshua) of St Johns, FL, as well as the great loves of her life, her granddaughters, Skyler Kendall Zuckerman, Gwendolyn Rose Casey, Jillian Elyse Casey, and Peyton Miley Zuckerman.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 18th in Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 11801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32223. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 19th in San Juan Del Rio Catholic Church, 1718 State Road 13, North, St. Johns, FL 32259. Interment will be at Jacksonville National Cemetery at a date to be announced.
It is the family’s wish that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in her name to the St. Vincent de Paul Society: https://ssvpusa.org/
