Richard Marvin Davis

Richard Marvin Davis of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on January 11, 2017 with his family by his side. He was 85 years old. He was born in Springfield, Illinois to Martha and William Davis on April 22, 1931. Richard, or “Dick” as he was known, graduated from Henry Clay High School in Lexington, Kentucky in 1950. He served in the US Airforce from 1951 to 1954 and was honorably discharged. He attended the University of Kentucky and graduated with a degree in political science in 1959, followed by a degree in law in 1962. Dick went on to join the FBI in 1962. He served a long and productive career starting as an agent in Denver, CO and Newark, NJ, then as a unit chief at FBI headquarters in Washington, DC, and culminating as Assistant Special Agent in Charge in Jacksonville from 1980 to 1984. After retiring from the FBI in 1984, Dick went on to work for the Duval County School Board as the General Director of Security from 1985 to 1989. In 1994, he went to work for the FBI Background Investigation Contract Service Program, serving until 2007 doing background investigations and applicant interviews. Dick was a dedicated member of the Florida Crown Chapter of the Ex-FBI Agents Association. He loved golf and played as much as he could, despite referring to himself as a “golf hack”. He played with many friends and co-workers over the years and was a regular participant in the retired FBI agent’s biannual golf tournaments for 23 years. He also enjoyed taking care of his yard, reading, and spending time with his wife and daughter. He was a devoted and loving husband and father, as well as a genuine and loyal friend, who left an indelible mark on everyone’s life he touched. He will be greatly missed and always remembered.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Clarabell Burkhart Davis, and his older siblings Elizabeth Davis Spence and William Gene Davis. He is survived by his daughter, Heather Davis Johnson and son-in-law, Ralph Johnson of Jacksonville, Florida. He is also survived by several extended family members in Texas, Alabama, and Michigan.

We will celebrate his life, and all that he meant to each of us, beginning at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Cemetery located at 4801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville FL 32207.
