

ADKINS - Robert Charles Adkins,83 died Friday, April 4, 2014 at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born April 21, 1930 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Georgia, the son of Charlie Franklin and Martha Ruth Mathews Adkins.He graduated from Columbus High School, Columbus, Georgia in June of 1947. There he participated in many school activities including earning a letter in football. Immediately after graduation from high school he attended Emory University at the Oxford Campus.He was drafted into the United States Army early in the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1953. Soon after being discharged from the army, he entered mortuary school at Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in Nashville, TN. There he attained grades that permitted him to be inducted into membership in the National Scholastic Honor Fraternity, Pi Sigma Eta. Later he was graduated Cum Laude from Gupton-Jones.After Mortuary school he studied business, accounting and management courses at an extension of the University of Georgia.In 1957 he received a full scholarship and graduated from the National Foundation of Funeral Service School of Management in Chicago, IL.In 1955 he was one of the founders and became the fourth president of the Academy of Graduate Embalmers of Georgia. During many years of devoted membership in this organization, he became the recipient of the first President’s Award in 1986 for service to the organization and his profession. Then again in 2004 he received the President’s Award for an unprecedented second time. In 2004 this organization honored him by naming the opening function at its annual conference the Robert C. “Bob” Adkins Reception.
