Sandee was born on February 17, 1943, in Riverside, California to Miss Gertrude Edelberg Jacobs. She was, soon after, adopted by Mr. James & Meta Evans. She had a loving family who cared deeply for her. By thirteen, her father, James, passed away from Brain Cancer, and Meta did her best to take care of the family. It was from her that Sandee learned to persevere for family, regardless of the situation or cost. After high school, Sandee pursued a career in secretarial work at Pacific Steel.
By twenty-seven, she met her future husband, Johnny Weldon, a drummer, who caught her eye. Johnny was from Alabama, had served in the Air Force, was a disabled veteran, and was a dreamer who was always creatively thinking about music, art, business, cars, and possibilities of what could be. In time, they married and took off for Florida with dreams of a better life. In Jacksonville, where they settled, they had two children – Johnny & Julie. Still, times were tough, and they struggled.
Around that time, a lovely neighbor, Kathy Larochelle, invited Sandee to Hillcrest Baptist Church. It was there Sandee became a Christian and it changed her and her family’s life. Though, the next several decades would bring many trials; Sandee’s relationship to the Lord shined and she grew – even through great trials like the death of her mother, a heartbreaking divorce, and layoffs - she persevered. Meanwhile, she taught her family how to work hard, trust the Lord, be kind, invest spiritually, and give generously.
She supported her family in every way that she could. In work, she became a Loan Processor, and then later a Senior Mortgage Underwriter. She even traveled the country in that profession as an independent contractor. Her work ethic was always strong. She put in crazy hours and brought her work home most nights.
Still, she and her children were at church Sunday Morning, Sunday Night, Wednesday Night, and Monday Night Visitation. At Hillcrest Baptist she served in the Youth Department and was even a Sunday School teacher for middle school girls for many years. She was always willing to invest in the kids and made it her mission to ferry any of the youth that wanted to attend church but needed a ride. Later at Christ Fellowship, she served as the church’s faithful bookkeeper, and in another ministry called Bible Study Fellowship. Then at Christian Family Chapel, she served as a greeter, a support person for Divorce Care, a part of their discipleship ministries, and she loved their Amazing Grey’s Ministry.
Sandee was always known as a friendly person. She was easy to talk to, generous, spontaneous, relatable, soft-spoken, and willing to go out of her way to help or cook for somebody. She loved people. She loved adventures. She loved traveling, especially with others. For her, the best things about this life were the people she knew and loved. She always had deeply loyal friends and family throughout her life who stuck by her through thick and thin.
Sandee is survived by her children Johnny (Rachel), Julie (Cale), her grandchildren Caleb (Emmy), Mason (Evy), Myles, Caden, Jasmine, Rosalynn, and her great - grandchildren Maggie and Charlotte (coming in August). She was predeceased by her first great - granddaughter, Elsie Lynn. She was also loved and survived by sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Visitation for Sandee will be held on Monday, June 16, 2025, at 9:30 AM at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Legacy Lodge, 4801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207. Her funeral service will begin there at 10:00 am, with a brief graveside service following. A lunch reception will be held afterward at Christian Family Chapel at 10365 Old St Augustine Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32257.
