Skip was born February 9, 1936, in Fredonia, New York and died March 31, 2022, in Jacksonville, Florida.
Stennett has always been called “Skip”. When he was a baby, his mother wanted to call him “Kip”, but Lenore, his older sister couldn’t pronounce it and it came out “Skip” and it stuck.
Fredonia is a historic town. It had the first United States Grange Hall, the first Natural Gas well, and Lafayette, the last living general from the Revolutionary War visited there once. Also located there is The State University of New York (SUNY) at Fredonia.
So, this is where Skip was born and surrounded by his family and all this history, he grew up proud of his hometown. Skip was christened in the Catholic Church and was an active member as a young man. He was also active in his community as a volunteer fireman.
The original Fredonia State College building was turned into an elementary/junior high school named ’The Old Main’ and Skip attended classes there from kindergarten through 8th grade. He then went on to attend Fredonia High School from 9th through 12th grades. Also, during this time, he was a member of the New York National Guard Service.
Skip was inducted into the Armed Forces of the United States in June 1954. He was sent to Fort Jackson where he became a member of the 101st Airborne Unit and was stationed at Fort Gulick Canal Zone Panama as a radio operator in the Jungle Operations Training Center.
After his two years of service, he transferred to the United States Army Reserve Unit in New York. He was discharged from the Army in 1962 and he then moved to Florida.
In Florida Skip ultimately ended up working for Publix Supermarkets. During this time, he completed a Cornell University Meat Management Course. He began as a meat cutter, then progressed to become Market Manager in one of the markets located in Atlantic Beach, Florida.
Skip and Robyn Roberts Burton married June 18, 1980, in a private ceremony held in a local church with only witnesses and close friends in attendance. Theirs has been a happy marriage for 41 years filled with travel and adventure and seeing their families grow to include great, great grandchildren; and in retirement Skip was able to pursue his love of golf.
Skip loved to play games. He enjoyed card games like Bridge and Pinochle. He also enjoyed board games, and Dominoes. He especially loved Cribbage and Mah-Jongg.
Music was another one of his loves, and he had a guitar. Although he practiced and played a little, he never felt he had mastered it.
Skip was a member of American Legion Post 316 located in Atlantic Beach, Florida and the Jacksonville Beach Moose Lodge 1558.
Skip was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on December 7, 2021 and began treatment on December 14, 2021. After several setbacks and reactions to the chemo, treatment was halted on March 9, 2022.
Skip died peacefully, March 31, 2022.
He is predeceased by his parents, Anson Eugene Miller and Genevieve Catherine Stroehlein Miller and two sisters Lenore Corsi and Donna Mills.
He leaves behind one daughter, Mary Miller-Kennard, one granddaughter, five great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; stepdaughters, Cynthia Burton Dawkins and Mary Burton Byrd; five step-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren; sister, Gloria Miller Rhineheart and her husband Robert; and numerous nieces and nephews.
