Stephen Mallory Bowes Jr.

Stephen Mallory Bowes, Jr., age 94, died in Jacksonville, Florida on April 19, 2023. He was born in Pensacola, FL to Stephen M. Bowes, Sr., and the former Doris Rosenau Hirschman on May 12, 1928. Steve was a Mechanical Engineering graduate from Georgia Tech and worked for most of his career with Florida Machine and Foundry Company in Jacksonville, which allowed him to travel the world. Steve’s lifelong passion was sailing, both racing and cruising with his family. Steve was a competitive gymnast in college and very athletic throughout his life, distance running out of the Yates YMCA in downtown Jacksonville. He served with the US Army in Korea and was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Steve was predeceased by Elizabeth Alvarez Bowes (Liz), his wife of 62 years, and his siblings R. Patrick Bowes, John L. (Jack) Bowes and Rev. Charles J. Bowes. He is survived by his five children: Stephen M. Bowes, III (Arlene); Margaret Bowes Thoeni (Drew); Jennifer Bowes Johnson (Terry); Martha Bowes Wright (Robert); and Carolyn Ann Bowes. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 5, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Legacy Lodge, 4801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, FL followed by a rosary at 7:30 p.m. The funeral will be held on May 6th at 10:00 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church, 3383 University Blvd N., Jacksonville, FL with burial at Evergreen Cemetery.
