Wade Lee Hampton

JACKSONVILLE - Wade Lee Hampton, 94, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was born on December 2, 1928, in Vida, Alabama, the son of Wade Vanderbilt Hampton and Birdie Lee Crider Hampton. He was the youngest of six siblings, Wista, Rudolph, Frances, Leon and Eddie. Wade was a graduate of the Billingsley School and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1953, where he was the president of the Student Body of College of Business Administration, a member of Beta Alpa Psi, Delta Sigma Pi and Chi Alpha Phi honor societies and the Delta Chi fraternity. He was elected Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities and was designated a Distinguished Military Graduate. After completing U. S. Army ROTC, he served as a first lieutenant in the U. S. Army in the finance corp and was stationed in Korea. Wade’s professional life began as an accountant with Southern Bell Telephone Company in Atlanta, Charlotte and New York. When he transferred to Jacksonville, he met and married Anne Celeste Koger in 1962. He later worked for Koger Properties, Inc., and its successor entities, until his retirement in 1999. The next fifteen years were spent at Manormor Sotheby’s International Realty as a Realtor and Broker of record. He also held the CCIM designation. Wade served as president of numerous local organizations including Hope Haven Children’s Hospital, San Marco Preservation Society, North Florida Hunter Jumper Association and Memorial Park Association. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. He was a member of the Meninak Club of Jacksonville, Ye Mystic Revellers, the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Yacht Club. He served in various roles at Riverside Presbyterian Church including as an Elder, Head Usher and was on the Board of Trustees. He was a unique gentleman who brightened the days of all who knew him. In retirement Wade enjoyed travel, spending time with his children and grandchildren and tending to his garden. He was a “collector” and had a small shop, Antiques & Such, where treasures were sold. Wade was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife, Celeste Koger Hampton. He is survived by his children, including sons, Wade McKissick Hampton (Darlene), Peter Winthrop Hampton (Joye), a daughter, Anne Hampton Langley (Sam), and grandchildren: Jessica Langley Dawson (David), Dylan James Langley (Sade), Edwin Craig Langley, Ashton Trumbull Hampton, Wade Mathews Hampton and Reid McKissick Hampton and great grandchildren Olivia Naomi Benjamin, Ulysses Tobler, III and Aaliyah Noelle Langley. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. The family would like to thank his caregiver, Tysheana Peterson, for her tremendous kindness, love and support over the last two years. A private burial will take place on Friday, January 20 at Oaklawn Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 21 at 11 AM at Riverside Presbyterian Church with a reception following in Kissling Hall. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Riverside Presbyterian Church.
