Born on October 28th, 1946, in East St. Louis, Illinois, William was the son of the late William J. Egan, Sr. and Ann T. Egan (Schutzenhofer).
William dedicated 35 years of service to the railroad, beginning with Penn Central as a brakeman and locomotive engineer, then continuing through Conrail in multiple leadership roles, and retiring as System Road Foreman for CSX.
For the past 25 years, William made his home in Deercreek Country Club, where he cherished his neighbors, friendships, and countless rounds of golf. A devout Catholic, he was a faithful parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church for more than two decades.
Above all, William’s greatest joy was his family. His first love was his wife, Patricia Lynette Egan, with whom he shared a beautiful life filled with entertaining, traveling, and creating lasting memories. Patricia preceded him in death in 2013. William was also preceded in death by his parents, William Sr. and Ann Egan and his in-laws, Anna Mae and George Cook, and brother-in-law, Joseph Hatzl.
He is survived by his loving children, Cheryl Lynn Stakes (Jesse), William Joseph Egan III (Lisa), and Kelly Ann Taylor; his six grandchildren, Sarah Lynette Keitzer, Paul Brian Barnett, Edward Joseph Taylor, William Joseph Egan IV, Bennett Scott Egan, and Samuel Bryan Egan; and his three great-granddaughters, Hazel Lynn Keitzer, Violet Ann Keitzer, and Ruby Mae Keitzer. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Margaret Toth (Robert), Carol Ann Kotarba (John), Patricia Hatzl, and his brother, Thomas Egan.
William will be remembered as a devoted husband, an extraordinary father, a proud grandfather, and a man who adored his three great-granddaughters. His legacy lives on in the love he gave his family and the many lives he touched throughout his journey.
A viewing will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, 9800-3 Baymeadows Road, Jacksonville, FL 32256, on Friday, August 29, 2025, at 12:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00 p.m.
