William Michael Galvin was born December 1, 1930 to John 'Jack' and Sarah Galvin in Brooklyn, New York. The youngest of two children, Bill attended public school in New York City and worked in the family trucking business. Not wanting to inherit the family trucking business, he petitioned his father for help paying for school at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, where he became a member of the Psi Epsilon fraternity, the star pitcher of his Varsity baseball team, while also becoming Hamilton's standout football hero, and an ace in the hockey rink. He carried that love of sports throughout his life. He ultimately graduated with a Bachelor's in Political Science.
After leaving Hamilton, Bill briefly attended St. John's University School of Law, but left early to serve his country and entered the Marine Corps as a carrier-based naval aviator deployed to Japan in 1952 during the Korean conflict. He was released from active duty in 1953, but then served in the Reserves until 1955. With his “tailhook” days behind him, he traveled to Washington, D.C. where his career took him from the halls of the United States Senate to a long career in aerospace consulting.
In 1967 he met Evelynne Wallace Brooke of Ponte Vedra, Florida, through a mutual acquaintance, and it was love at first sight. They married the following year in Atlantic Beach, Florida, initially relocating to Miami where they welcomed a daughter, Kelly, to their blended family of Bill's young daughter, Joan, and Evelynne's grown son, Kenneth, and two teenage daughters, Deborah and Barbara.
With Evelynne by his side, Bill’s professional life had them travelling extensively, as well as moving often, from Miami, Florida to Beverly Hills, California, and then settling in the Washington, D.C. area, which became his business home base. Bill and Evelynne jet-set around the world together as Bill grew his business. They were fortunate to experience things only most can dream of. Even after Bill’s retirement in 1989, Evelynne and Bill loved to take cruises and road trips around the country to keep in touch with old friends and family.
As a younger man, Bill’s passions included flying, tennis, and horse racing. He and Evelynne owned several race horses, including a Kentucky Derby contender. Bill loved sports. He enjoyed watching any sport that was broadcast, only quip being that he would watch baseball with the volume off because the commentators didn't know what they were talking about. Bill was a true Irish storyteller - actually the best - and no one that he met escaped a joke or a story, even if he'd told it before.
Bill is survived by step-son, Kenneth Brooke, step-daughter, Deborah (Brooke) McGinnis and son-in-law, Richard McGinnis, step-daughter, Barbara (Brooke) Reynolds, daughter, Joan (Galvin) Newhouse and son-in-law, Dan Newhouse, and daughter, Kelly (Galvin) Broomfield and son-in-law, Ted Broomfield, plus all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren that go along with a great big family but are too numerous to list but loved immensely. Semper Fi.
