Bill was born in Athens, Alabama in 1929. When he was a young boy, he and his family moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where his grandfather started a lumber mill and built four houses on Preston Place in the San Jose area of Jacksonville. He grew up in one of those houses and family still live in those houses today. Bill attended Columbia Military School in middle school and then graduated from Landon High School, class of 1947. He then attended The University of Florida before serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
Bill built a successful career in sales and marketing that spanned several industries, from spirits to candy. Known for his engaging personality, quick wit, and natural ability to connect with people, Bill had a gift for making people laugh, either through a well-timed joke, an entertaining story, or just his lively presence. He had a way of brightening every room he entered. Bill was a natural salesman.
Outside of work, he embraced life’s pleasures. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed time on the course along with working at TPC Sawgrass. He was a passionate sports fan who proudly supported both the Florida Gators and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Whether watching a game, sharing stories, or spending time with family, he brought warmth, humor, and enthusiasm to those around him.
Bill is survived by his son, William Stephen Garrett, Jr.; his daughter-in-law, Alison Glass Garrett; and his grandsons, William Stephen Garrett, III, and Rhett Ashby Garrett. He is also survived by his step-grandson, James H. Mahoney, III; and his half-brother, Andrew Riggsbee and wife, Beth; along with two generations of nieces and nephews, all of whom will continue to cherish his memory and the many lessons and laughs he shared throughout his long and meaningful life.
Bill will be remembered for his enduring friendly spirit, and the many lives he touched over nearly a century of life.
