

William J. Phillips Jr., 76, passed away on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at the Community Hospice Hadlow Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Bill was born November 19, 1935 in Jacksonville, Florida son of William J. Phillips Sr. and Virginia Geraldine Price. Upon graduating from Robert E. Lee High School he attended Jacksonville University and began his career in the insurance industry with Prudential Insurance Company at the age of 22. He was with Independent Life Insurance Company for 38 years having obtained his CLU and CHFC he became a Vice President of the Ordinary Agency Division. After retiring, he began Phillips Insurance and Financial Services to present. He most enjoyed spending time with his family at his lake home in Melrose, Florida. He was known for his integrity. Bill was a leader with Boy Scouts of America through Grace Chapel and an accomplished Scout Master at Lakewood Presbyterian Church troop 183. Additionally he was an active participant member of the Morocco Temple Arab Patrol and served in the Naval Reserves for 8 years. In addition to his wife of 57 years, Frances S. Phillips, he is survived by his brother Dr. Robert L. Phillips and Sister-in-law Carol Phillips; children Dr. Guy L. Phillips and Kimberly P. Gartner and seven grandchildren, Austin, Hailey, Justin, Caleb, Travis, Danielle and Megan. Known for his positive attitude, kind heart, and generosity he will be greatly missed. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Lakewood Presbyterian Church, 2001 University Blvd. W., 32217 with Pastor Terry Lucarelli officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery.
