

Dr. William “Bill” George Short, Jr., of Jacksonville, Florida began his second life on Friday, July 23, 2010, after a brave battle with cancer. He was born in Mullens, West Virginia to the late William “Red” Short Sr. and the late Garnet Short. Dr. Short graduated from Marshall University and earned his medical degree from West Virginia University in 1974. Dr. Short was married to Brenda N. Short of Jacksonville, Florida in 1983.
Dr. Short dedicated his entire life to the service of his patients’ medical needs. He was a member of the Southern Heart Group, DBA St. Luke’s Cardiology Associates A where he worked as a Cardiologist. He also worked as a Principal and Sub-Investigator for Clinical Research at St. Luke’s Cardiology Associates A and at Diagnostic Cardiology, P.A. Dr. Short was on active staff at St. Luke’s Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida, Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida, Baptist Medical Center of Jacksonville, Florida and was provisionally active at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Jacksonville, Florida.
Dr. Short’s patients came from multiple states, as Dr. Short’s philosophy was to treat patients like family instead of like patients. Dr. Short exemplified humility and compassion in his practice. His accomplishments include Board Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine Subspecialty Interventional Cardiology, American Board of Internal Medicine Subspecialty Cardiovascular Disease. Dr. Short was a member of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Heart Association, the Florida Thoracic Society and the Community Physicians Group, Inc.
When Dr. Short wasn’t giving his all to his patients, he enjoyed giving his all to
West Virginia University Mountaineer football and to the Jacksonville Jaguars where he was a season ticket-holder since the team’s inception. His loyalty to team and his sense of humor was inspiring to all who knew him.
Dr. Short is survived by his wife, Brenda N. Short, and his daughter, Meaghan Short Jones and son-in-law Corporal Andrew Jones of Kailua, Hawaii. He is also survived by 1 soon-to-be born grandson, William Grayson Jones, and by his two sisters, Patricia Davidson of Salem, Virginia and Jo-Ann Lonker of Vinton, Virginia, as well as a host of loving nieces and nephew.
A celebration of Dr. Short’s life will be held on Friday, July 30, 2010, at the Hardage-Giddens funeral home located at 11801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida 32223 from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. His funeral will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church located at 11730 Old St. Augustine Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32258 at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow across the street at the Cody Enrichment Center located at 4152 Loretto Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32258 from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Lung Association.
